The season open was full of both very exciting moments and great disappointments for me.

During parts of it Moffat taps into that special something that made "Blink" one of the best new Doctor Who's I've seen. However I rarely ever agree with the killing of a title character like that.

More often than not it's a cheap ploy. This is not to say that I'm against making our characters mortal, Ka D'argo and Wash from their respective series had extremely powerful and meaningful ends, but that's because the show was ending. So to kill The Doctor and make a huge deal out of how he is indeed dead is cheap like killing Superman every 3 years just to bring him back in some ridiculous fashion unless this is the shows last season.

I agree that the character of Rory is becoming a great addition. There are moments when he still seems like the "tin dog", but then Moffat will remind us of exactly all of what he's been through. I also like him because it takes us back to the human parallels that I like the companions to make instead of some unrequited love interest.

Conversely I love, love, LOVE Dr. River Song. She's the new Captain Jack. The advanced, brilliant time traveler that while doing their best to roll with the Doctor is still sometimes confounded by him. The addition of this character with your standard companion sets up that beautiful dichotomy of the Doctor being alien but humanized.

Overall I've very excited for this season of Doctor Who. I expect there isn't anything that Moffat will do to make the opening death of the Doctor seem a worthwhile story point, but I'm not closed to the possibility of being pleasantly surprised.

I think Moffat is really starting to become comfortable with being the dude. His episodes were always some of my favorite during the previous seasons, but it seemed to me with the first season of Matt Smith that he was trying to get the real feel of being at the wheel.

The opening credits kind of threw me, being from Amy's POV, and at first I was honestly put off it. While the human companions are important part of any Doctor I just seemed like that were making Amy overly important. Maybe it's just to drive her home more before possibly taking her away.

Over all it's an exciting first episode and I agree it's on par with my beloved Firefly.

Excellent review, and I wanted to say how much I agreed with the way you defined bravery, here: "He’s likable and brave, and he displays the reality of bravery: that it doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid, it means that you act in spite of your fear."

Absolutely true!

Good suggestion! Unfortunately I've not seen Leverage, so it sounds like an oversight I need to correct.

I'm kinda shocked not to see "Leverage" included on your recap of Mark Sheppard's filmography. It's one of his best roles--so good, in fact, that whenever I see him show up on anything else I'm briefly excited and then disappointed that it's not that character.

This is the set I've been waiting for just to get McGann!! Going to be a very expensive figure .... ouch. But on the plus side I can finally get rid of that Oscar Wilde action figure I never got around to re-painting.
