The official The Avengers thread

Can Batman really breathe in space? Who would win in a battle between John Byrne and Erik Larsen? Love your Transformers? Are you just nuts for mint-on-card in general? This is the place to talk about it!

The official The Avengers thread

Figured with the first significant trailer it was time for a thread.

So, it is up:

i have to say, love what I see here. The dynamics look right, the action looks great. All the characters look fantastic. I really have nothing to complain about. I really hope we get a Gollum quality Hulk this go around. The quick look we get is promising, but I really hope they have finally cracked the secret code of making his skin look real.

We now have only 7 months left to fuss and fret. So far, so good.

I have to admit I'm disappointed with yet another Hulk recast... but other than that, it looks good. Not sure we needed that line about "Avenging" the Earth Tony, Fury already established the name of the group if I'm not mistaken.

Sigh. It's a mixed bag for me really. When I think Avengers I tend to think of massive alien threats, organisations of super villians.... not Loki. Yeah it's nice to tie in to the Thor movie like that, but did we really need a mystical threat? At that point you'd want Doctor Strange in the trenches with you... not Hawkeye. My main fear is that it's going to be a very Thor-centric flick because of it's choice of villain.

...

In any event, it looks well done... I can only hope that someone over at Marvel is making sure this one is a bit stronger written than a single super hero movie. The main thing that'll make or break it will be the team's group dynamic... which seems to be their emphasis based on the trailer.

So you're not aware that it was Loki who brought the Avengers together in the first place?

Ironbite-even I know that.

I was about to make the same observation iron bite. Loki was the one and only villain in the inaugural issue. So they are sticking with canon here. Now, they are departing from cannon with the heroes. I personally like that we get Hawkeye and Black Widow rather than Ant-Man and Wasp. I do feel they better give us a far more threatening Loki than the one from Thor. They do start to establish that with the trailer. I think the cube will need to play a part and the end of Thor would seem to indicate that will be the case.

I am not thrilled with recasting Banner either. I happen to have really enjoyed Norton's take. However in all honesty, I don't think he would have worked well in an ensemble piece like this. He is the only actor to date that has had issues with the Marvel execs. Not to say he is difficult or that I know everything that went on, it just seems to reinforce my feeling he ultimately would not have done well working along side other healthy egos :)

Yes, I'm aware of the Loki thing... but at the same time this is a movie, and as such you usually either go all canon, or trail your own path based on the majority of the material. Changing out members like that, you'd figure they'd go the latter route.

I guess my main problem with our new Bruce Banner is the fact that I feel he'd make a much better Doctor Strange. *shrug* Given a larger cast, and more big name Hollywood actors around him to play off of, I don't think Norton would have been a problem. Thing is, he was recovering the franchise from that Ang Lee horror that came before him... so he was under a lot of pressure to make sure he didn't screw things up. I don't blame him for second guessing Marvel's decisions given those circumstances.

And while I like the characters Hawkeye and Black Widow... there's the problem of losing that drama that came from Ant-Man and Wasp. As I said before, the main crux of this is going to be based on the chemistry between characters... so swapping out major players for different ones leaves a bit of a void. Worse, I fear that Marvel might outright neuter said characters just because it's easier. "Oh, they're trained agents of SHIELD... professionals." I read that as emotionless and dull... but my fingers are crossed that I'm wrong.

I was at the Avengers panel at NYCC... Mark Ruffalo is going to be awesome as Banner. We got to see a clip from the movie that he and Scarlett Johansson were both pretty prominent in.

No kidding, this place was gang busters and then cricket city.........what the bunny!!

Loved the movie. I have seen it twice now.

We finally get to see a proper Hulk; both in story and CGI rendering. This gives me hope for future films.
