Virtumonde.... Here's some Firefox add-ons to help.

Postby Akitsu » Sat Mar 21, 2009 9:35 am

Siiigh... after fighting a 6 hour battle against the beast there was simply too much damage done for me to salvage it, as virtumonde and two other viruses gang raped my system yesterday.

I've reinstalled Windows, but now the Zoom ADSL modem isn't connecting to the NIC for some reason. Ethernet is plugged directly in... yet no connection to the bloody thing at all.

Any suggestions?

edit: Updated info below, just changed the title so people know I've got the droids they're looking for.

Fuck it... lol. Nuked the fuck out of that shoddy piece of effervescent crapola that is Windows, and have installed UBUNTU!!!!

Holy shiznit this thing is fucking fast... and on top of that no problems getting on the net again. No idle processes in the background slowing things down, and once I get Beryl installed, it'll look like a million bucks. (Even though at the basic level it's brilliant in comparison to XP)

Now to set everything up...

I'm positively having wet dreams about Ubuntu these days... lol.

Managed to get into ONE of my two old drives... so not everything was lost... but a shitload was. I'm reserving Windows for my offline PC and laptop.... the internet will be accessed through Ubuntu.

I'm definitely digging the update feature as well. Before updating meant loooong shut downs, or worse... repeat warnings that Windows updated by itelf and I had 5 minutes to abort a reboot no matter what I was working on. Now, updates take a few minutes and never asks for a reboot! Not only that, the fact that it requires a password for any major changes means I can't be hijacked again.

Any suggestions on games that run without major problems on this lovely bit of OS?

Okay folks... this page is a fucking godsend. Most of it is stuff you'll probably want to skip, but two add-ons in particular are a must for safer Firefox surfing.

Blocksite and Adblock Plus (under Identity and Privacy halfway down the page) are brilliant.

Blocksite lets you blacklist specific sites that bug you, be they popup, ads, or otherwise.

Adblock Plus actually lets you SUBSCRIBE TO ADVERTISER LISTS THAT BLOCK MOST EVERY AD. Even if one slips through, it add an option to your right click menu to NEVER LOAD THAT AD IMAGE AGAIN!!!!

The main way viruses like Virtumonde propogate is through these fucking popup ads... so take a few minutes to protect yourself. You won't regret it.
