Captain America - The Official Movie Thread

Can Batman really breathe in space? Who would win in a battle between John Byrne and Erik Larsen? Love your Transformers? Are you just nuts for mint-on-card in general? This is the place to talk about it!

Captain America - The Official Movie Thread

Postby LLcruize » Mon Mar 21, 2011 6:12 pm

I did not see any posts on the upcoming film, so figured I would get one going.

Thor is my most anticipated comic to film coming out, with Cap coming in a very close second. I really loved the teaser we got during the Superbowl. I would like to have a full fledged trailer to watch though. After early concerns over the costume, I have to say what they ended up with I really like. It is practical, which I thought was a key so as to make the action much more believable. I really like they have stuck to the 1940's origin and didn't go with a modern take with flashes back to the 40's origin.

I'm really excited about this movie, though I am a bit concerned I see nothing with Nazis in the film. Even Red Skull's promo picture has him in Hydra garb.

I love watching Captain America kick the shit out of Nazis, yes. I keep hoping there's a scene that mirrors the first issue's cover.

What is up with them not being Nazis?

Doing some digging, I found a Newsarama interview with the writer of the Captain America Prequel Comic.

It does not exactly inspire confidence.

Nrama: There is the notion out there among fans that the role of Nazis might be downplayed in the movie.

Van Lente: It isn’t. Captain America: First Vengeance is chockfull of Nazis, particularly once we start getting into Johann Schmidt’s origin in chapters 3 and 4. They’re not downplayed. Schmidt runs an organization called Hydra, which starts as a part of the Third Reich power structure, and so therefore they are Nazis.

I can sort of see why people are like, they’re not seeing a bunch of guys in SS uniforms or Gestapo uniforms running around in the Super Bowl trailer— that’s because many of the Nazis in First Avenger wear Hydra uniforms.

It is not some kind of rewriting of world history. There are Nazis in the movie, I’ve read the script. It is not trying to pretend that the Nazis didn’t exist, or that World War II didn’t happen the way we all know it from history.

So...Captain America will be battling Hydra in World War II. "Many" of the enemies in the movie wear Hydra Uniforms. But it's okay because...they're actually Nazis?

That...isn't really cutting it for me. At the same time, I'll wait for more information before I condemn it.

Hmmm, interesting. Hydra/Nazi, potAto/potato, tomAto/tomato. Most folks are going to assume they are Nazis so why not go on and call them that. Geez, the PC police at work again.

Also, all the other organizations that evolved via the Third Reich, Hydra would be the first whose emblem supplanted the Swastika.

But like I said, more information is required before I go with a visceral knee jerk "World War Two Movie Without Nazis!" reaction.

Now if they have the Hand responsible for Pearl Harbor...

I think this is being done for merchandise reasons. I mean, can you imagine Red Skull in Toys R 'Us for five year old boys wearing a swastika?

If Hydra is a specialized branch of the Third Reich in the movie (like the SS) I don't see the huge deal with losing the swastika arm band.

Yeah, not every branch of the Third Reich wore the swastika. Differing branches had their different symbols. I think Red Skull is wearing an iron cross, at least. And insignia or not, he still looks like a Nazi.
