The official Green Lantern movie thread

Can Batman really breathe in space? Who would win in a battle between John Byrne and Erik Larsen? Love your Transformers? Are you just nuts for mint-on-card in general? This is the place to talk about it!

Warner Bros. To Pursue ‘Green Lantern’ Sequel

Warner Bros. is already planning a sequel to Ryan Reynolds' superhero pic Green Lantern, despite the film’s soft performance at the box office. Sources say Warners still believes in the franchise, even if the studio is “somewhat disappointed” with Green Lantern’s result. Over the weekend, Green Lantern fell a steep 66% at the domestic box office, grossing $18.4 million for a cume of $89.3 million. That’s a big decline. Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said the movie is settling in, pointing out that fanboy pics often see a significant drop-off in their second weekends. Still, Green Lantern fell off more than recent superhero pics Thor and X-Men: First Class. Thor dropped 47% in its second weekend, while First Class dropped 56%. Similar films that have seen the same sort of dip that Green Lantern did include Hulk, which dropped nearly 70% in its second outing. Green Lantern cost $200 million to produce before a sizeable marketing spend (rival studios say it was one of the most expensive on record). Warners, preparing for the end of Harry Potter, needs new franchises, so was willing to invest big in Green Lantern. A formidable obstacle standing in Green Lantern’s way now is Paramount’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which opens in theaters around the globe on Tuesday night.

Good.

With the huge plot/mythos dump that kinda hobbled this one the other should be pretty damn decent.

Yes, this is good news for the Lantern fans. Too bad that WB didn't give the same chance to Returns. I think as long as they don't go mega cheap with the sequel, they can win over the negative folks from the first one.

*sigh of relief*

Assuming this doesn't share the same fate as Superman Returns' sequel.

Finally saw it, really enjoyed it. At last, DC has made a truly good (in the past few years anyway) super-hero flick that didn't have Batman in it *lol*

You know, it seems that after the glut of critical derision, most people are coming away pretty satisfied by this. It's a shame the critical drubbing hurt its box office so badly.

it is down to less than 1000 screens, so I hope it hits our local discount theater soon, I really want to see it. Looks like it might end up with 115 million domestic. It only has 33 million overseas. Surely it hasn't been released wide overseas yet. It is a good thing Potter is setting records and TDKR will set records. I think having that money is what the Warners bean counters planned on when they green lit a sequel. Plus, with Batman being done after next year, they need to have another comic franchise to go along with what they hope is a successful Superman reboot.

It doesn't open in most major markets overseas until late August.

Ah, OK. I was about to say, there is no way it was in a wide overseas release with just 33 million. Strange that they are releasing it so far down the road from the domestic. Never have understood why some movies do that. Kind of like I have never understood why DVD/Blu-ray release dates are different domestically and overseas as well as the difference in content. Sometimes domestic releases are better, other times foreign. Why the hell make it so complicated, just release the same day with the same content.

OK, finally got to see Lantern today.

All in all, I enjoyed it. I have to admit the suit rendoring looks a lot better when seen in the film. Reynolds reigned in the Van Wilder deliver, though did let him slip out a little here and there, especially at the beginning. I have to agree with the consensus and say the scenes away from earth were far more engaging and fun to watch. I do think the story did suffer from having a lot of writers contributing. For lack of a more intelligent description, it was one of the clunkier origin stories I have seen. It is definitely a setup for a far greater sequel.

I look forward to seeing this on Blu-ray. I saw it at our local discount theater who does not have digital projectors or screens, so I did not get to see it in the highest of quality to really appreciate the SFX. I enjoyed it enough that it will be a purchase for me when it hits disk.

Word on the street is that the DVD/Blu-ray is going to be an extended cut, perhaps the cut Martin Campbell originally intended. It's common knowledge at this point that WB execs shredded it in the editing room. That might help with the rushed tone of the plot, and hopefully give us more time on Oa.

That is good to hear. You can tell watching it some major cuts were made. I absolutely love Martin Campbell. When you have a director like Campbell who made Zorro significant again, not to mention helping Banderas and Zeta-Jones become huge, and successfully rebooted Bond not once, but twice, you leave him the hell alone and let him make his movie. I can't wait to see this on Blu-ray with extensive input from Campbell. I just hope they stick to their guns and unlike Returns, go forward with the sequel because I think it could really be a good film. DC needs it given Batman will be taking a vacation after next year and Supes won't be flying again until 2013.

Here are the specs and release date as reported by blu-ray.com . A little light on the extras. Very surprised they are not including the SDCC panel. I have become a big fan of the Maximum Movie Mode, so very glad to see that included here. Wish we had a Campbell commentary. I really want the extended cut to be a true extended cut that is substantial. I hope the Universe According to Green Lantern is a full on history of the character like what Marvel does for their releases.

Warner Bros. has announced the release of their 2011 superhero flick Green Lantern. According to IGN, the release will feature an extended cut of the film and will be available in a 3D combo pack (Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy) for $40.99 and a standard Blu-ray combo pack (Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy) for $35.99. Both versions will also include Ultraviolet compatibility, which allows consumers to stream or download the film to various devices.

Green Lantern hit theaters back in June but failed meet the studio's box office expectations. The critically panned film was directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and featured Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan alongside Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong. Warner is hoping the DC film will perform better on home video.

Technical specs have yet to be confirmed, but a list of special features has been made available. These include:

Maximum Movie Mode with PIP
The Universe According to Green Lantern
Ryan Reynolds Becomes Green Lantern
Deleted Scenes
"Justice League #1" Digital Comic
Preview of Green Lantern: The Animated Series
BD-Live
Access code for Sinestro Corp Batman Skin on the Warner Bros. Interactive video game Batman: Arkham City

A Friday release date of October 14th, 2011 has been set for Green Lantern. Stay tuned for an update when pre-orders go up on Amazon.

According to the UK specs for the Blu-ray, there will be 8 more minutes in the extended cut. I had hoped for 12 to 15 more minutes. Disappointing, but hopefully it is quality 8 minutes at least.

Hopefully this 8 minutes will explain the massive plot gap in the movie, and not be extensions of scenes where Ryan quips smart ass lines. Personally I was hoping for a good 30-40 minutes to help flesh out the plot... but 8 minutes is good... especially if there's also deleted scenes. Given that they want to push a sequel into production, I'm hoping they looked closely at what worked and what didn't before making any changes.
