Great piece, Corvus. But I'm sorry, I have to caption...

That is excellent.

It invokes thoughts of the pirate story guy from Watchmen.

That was exactly my first thought. Bravo!
Unsettling dreams plague the people of Arkham, while something terrible rages in the hills outside of Dunwich. A sickly mist crawls over ancient Kingsport and whispers abound of the pollution of Innsmouth’s bloodlines.

This is Lovecraft Country.

Jeez Corvus you need to be doing covers or something!

That is sharp, love the soggy ground effect too.

It is indeed superb, as always. But so you don't get a swelled head let me throw in my criticisms too.

The lighting is sort of omni-directional and bright. There isn't much shadow on the guy at all.

If the light is coming from the direction he's looking (guessing cause I can't tell) then there would be heavier shadows on his right side because of the way his body is turned. If this piece is not entirely finished though then this may be finished out when the rest of the rendering is done.

I too like the soggy ground effect. It's very good.

However, the guy isn't sinking at all. He's standing on top of the slush, defying the illusion of weight. The guy looks good but he seems superimposed over the area. Shouldn't his boots be sinking at least partly into this muck?

Otherwise, I think the piece is outstanding. Major props!

Thanks :)

I'd love to be a cover artist. But you usually have to be ass-stompingly awesome to get away with just covers *lol*

Navarre: He's being illuminated by a bright flash of lightning. The colored version will make clear that the lighting from behind, dim though it will be, is coming from the eyes and mouth of the Dragon-shadow. it also bears mentioning that the penciled version has more shading. The scanner doesn't pick it all up.

As far as his feet not sinking enough, its a valid complaint that I will address at some point. Its partly a result of the figure and background elements being two separate images.

Yep, I see tinkered feet. Much better. :-)

If it were me I'd make his feet really look squished into the mud. The ground looks so dour anyway that having his feet sink halfway in would really give that, well, sinking feeling; especially with him being a hefty fellow.

But the improvement you made are definitely that: an improvement. Good deal.

As for the lighting, I knew you had a reason for everything. You know your craft too well to overlook lighting source and rendering of shadows.

I look forward to seeing the colored piece. ... After all, everyone knows pencilers don't matter. It's the digital coloring that makes art great. ;-)

I can't wait to see what the colored version looks like. I have no comment that could be remotely helpful concerning the current version, so I'll save my final comments for when I see the finished pencil. I love the shadow of the dragon. That's just darn cool, but then you know how much I love dragons Corvus ;)
